Studies suggest that around 57% of people in India suffer from tooth sensitivity problems. Tooth sensitivity occurs when the enamel of our tooth or gums is in recession, causing exposure of the inner layer known as Dentin. The dentin is made up of pores or tubes that run from the outside to the nerve in the center. Stimulation of this dentin to hot and cold temperatures increases sensitivity and pain.
Here are 7 things you can do to get relief from tooth sensitivity:
1 . Brush gently
Brushing teeth vigorously erodes the enamel, exposing teeth and gums. Brush your teeth gently using a soft bristle brush for 2 mins in up and down motion.
2 . Use a desensitizing toothpaste
India offers a plethora of desensitizing and fluoride based toothpaste. Consult your dentist for the right toothpaste.
3 . Avoid acidic drinks and foods
Highly acidic food and drinks wear away the enamel, making our teeth sensitive and exposed. Avoid indulging in high acidic food such as colas, coffee, alcohol, lemon and starchy foods. Instead consume water, milk and milk products and fresh fruits and vegetables with large water content like cucumber and apples.
4 . Rinse with fluoride mouthwash
You can also use a fluoride mouthwash to help strengthen your gums based on your dentist’s recommendation. According to Indian Dental Association,” Fluoride builds up fluorapatite crystals in the tooth thereby making it more resistant to dental decay. It also disrupts bacteria’s ability to damage the tooth. Fluoride also promotes remineralization thereby strengthening the tooth. Hence fluoride is considered to be one of the most effective agents against dental decay. “
5 . Skip tooth bleaching
Avoid tooth bleaching treatments when you have cavities as the whitening agents make teeth more sensitive.
6 . Change your brush once in 3 months
Hard bristles and old brushes damage our gums most often than not. So change your brushes at least once every 3 months and buy soft and sensitive brushes.
7 . Visit your dentist every 3 months
Locate a local and trusted dentist who can provide oral care on a consistent basis. Based on your specific requirements, the dentist will share your next appointments.Try to meet the dentist at least once in 3 months to have a pain free smile!
