The first thought that perturbs most of us is that it takes so long for our hair to grow and reach the desired length whereas we happen to lose them in one go. Losing close to 50-100 strands a day is normal, however, if the number shoots beyond 150, one must cautiously try effective ways to fight hair fall. Receding hairline, thinning of hair and losing the natural hair volume are amongst the common signs of hairfall.
CAUSES
Common causes of hair-fall are stress, scalp infections, hereditary conditions and medical conditions such as anaemia, autoimmune diseases, thyroid disorders. Hair fall in some cases is also temporary and situational such as during pregnancy, menopause and during climate change.
PRACTICAL WAYS TO MANAGE HAIRFALL
Some practical ways to manage hairfall are
1 . Eat Healthy
-Include lots of greens and vegetables (such as spinach, beans, kale and lentils) to your daily diet in the form of salads, smoothies and dishes.
-Also include foods that are a rich source of vitamins, minerals and iron such as nuts and seeds to your daily diet to improve hair growth.
2 . Exercise Regularly
– Follow an exercise regimen which may include a combination of several activities such as weight bearing and muscle strengthening exercises.
-Exercise regularly for about 30 minutes. Daily workout helps improve the overall blood circulation and blood flow to the hair follicles.
3 . Nourish Your Hair
-Massage your scalp with oils (such as almond oil and coconut oil) regularly.
-Massage slowly with your fingertips as it increases the flow of blood to the hair follicles and strengthen the hair roots.
4 . Daily Hair Care
-Wash and brush your hair regularly. Brushing/ combing your hair also helps in increasing the blood flow.
-Avoid blow dry, hair styling and hair sprays. Heat and chemicals further weaken the hair follicles and add to the problem.
5 . Choose Your Shampoo Wisely
-Watch out for harsh chemicals like parabens, lauryl sulphate and Sodium chloride. Parabens which are used as preservatives in shampoos contain estrogens which lead to hair loss. Lauryl sulphate, an anionic surfactant used in many cleaning and hygiene products, also cause hair fall.
-Major cause of pattern baldness in men and hair loss in women is DHT(Dihydrotestosterone). Make sure your shampoo has DHT blockers.
