With our fast paced lifestyles and erratic eating schedules our hair is loosing its luster and color at a much younger age. These days it is very common to see young adults and teenagers with grey hair. So, what causes greying of hair and how can it be prevented or at least delayed? Read on to find out.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?
Some of the common causes of premature greying include genetic predisposition, smoking, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal fluctuations, pollution, stress and diseases such as thyroid and chronic sinusitis.
HOW DOES HAIR LOSE ITS COLOR?
Hair loses its color due to a wide variety of factors. Lack of proper blood circulation to the scalp, toxins, lack of attention to scalp skin are the major reasons behind premature gray hair. Strands of hair turn white or grey due to low amounts of melanin, the pigment that gives our hair its natural color. The melanocyte activity slows down with age and the body stops producing melanin leading to white/grey hair.
WHAT ARE THE WAYS TO PREVENT GREYING?
Instead of troubling your hair with chemical dyes and oils that promise to blacken it forever, let’s look at some habits that can be inculcated to delay premature greying, while maintaining a healthy scalp.
1 . Massage Your Scalp
Make sure to give your scalp a hot oil massage to promote circulation and help in better delivery of hair nutrients. It will also help in getting rid of dead cells and keep your hair in optimal health. You can use mustard oil or coconut oil 1 to 2 times a week.
2 . Stay Away From Hair Color
While you may be tempted to try out different hair colors that are in this season, refrain from coloring too often. Using harsh hair chemicals can damage the melanin producing cells and make your hair more prone to greying.
3 . Protect Your Hair From External Damage
Keep your hair safe from external pollutants like dust, excessive sunlight and pollution. All these factors can contribute towards graying your hair at an early age. When stepping out, cover your hair in a scarf or tie it in a loose bun. Choose a sulfate and silicone free mild shampoo and conditioner. Avoid overuse of styling tools and restrict their use to once a week or even less.
4 . Have Protein In Every Meal
Proteins contain an amino acid called phenylalanine, which combines with the enzymes present in proteins to produce melanin. So supplement your regular diet with eggs, sprouted beans, liver, lean meat, fish, soy and fortified cereals.
5 . Have Nuts
Nuts like cashews, peanuts, sesame seeds and almonds are loaded with copper which which helps in melatonin secretion and gives hair strands their color. Also include sunflower seeds in your nuts. They are loaded with vitamin E, iron and zinc that delay graying. Have a handful of nuts daily but make sure you take unprocessed and unsalted ones.
7 . Add Bananas To Your Diet
It is a fruit which contains high amount of iodine and iron. It also contains Vitamin –B1 (thiamine), B2( riboflavin) and B3(niacin). These nutrients help to give extra strength to hair follicles to produce more hair on the scalp and prevent greying. Have a banana everyday to give your hair the much needed nutrition.
8 . Have A Bowl Of Vitamin C Rich Foods
A salad of blueberries, kiwis, amla, oranges and strawberries can give you a daily dose of vitamin C. Vitamin C, an antioxidant removes extra oils from the scalp and keeps the scalp clear. .Fruits containing vitamin B-complex, C and minerals also help to keep your hair healthy by promoting proper blood circulation, removing toxins and providing extra strength to hair follicles.
