Dairy products serve as the best source of proteins for the children, study reveals
-A recent study was conducted by the University of Illinois to calculate the protein scores for eight sources of protein, derived from both plants and animals.
-The protein scores compared the relative amount of digestible amino acids in a particular food with a “reference protein,”. The reference protein was a theoretical protein that contains fully digestible amino acids in the proportions required for human nutrition at a particular stage of life.
-The study evaluated the overall ileal digestibility of crude protein and amino acids obtained from eight sources of animal and plant protein: whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate, skimmed milk powder, pea protein concentrate, soy protein isolate, soy flour, and whole-grain wheat.
-Each of the samples was given a digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) and were scored as per the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) standards.
-The study suggested soy protein isolate and soy flour were the best-qualified sources of proteins.
-Findings were published in the British Journal of Nutrition.
