The heater cooler devices used in open heart surgeries found to be contaminated with bacteria, a recent study reveals.
-In a recent study, analyzed about 89 heater-cooler units in 23 hospitals in Canada and the United States between 2015 and 2016.
-Heater cooler units are the devices used in the open heart surgeries in hospitals. These devices are rigged with water tanks that help to regulate the patients’ temperature during a surgery.
-Statistics from the study revealed that a total of 33 units of 89 heater cooler units (37%) tested for positive bacteria (M. chimaera).
-As per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on a global scale, close to 100 heart surgeries have been identified with M. chimaera infection.
-Findings were presented at the Annual Conference of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).
