1 . Cinnamon (Dal Chinni)

-Well known to provide relief in congestion due to cold, allergies and digestive problems. Cinnamon also helps to alleviate pain of menstrual cramps.

-Enriched with anti inflammatory and anti clotting properties, it is an excellent source of magnesium and calcium which are necessary to provide relief during menstruation.

Ways to Use 

-Prepare cinnamon tea by adding one fourth teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a cup of hot water. Let it settle for five minutes.

-Drink this tea at least two days before your period starts to get relief.

2 . Fennel Seeds (Methi)

-Fennel seeds are equipped with antispasmodic, phytoestrogenic and anti inflammatory properties.

-These seeds have been found to relax the uterus muscles and provide relief from cramps and discomfort.

Ways To Use

-Add one teaspoon of fennel seeds to boiling water (1 cup).Lower the flame for five minutes.

-Strain the tea and add honey to it.Drink this tea twice daily before 3 days of expected date of your beginning of menstrual cycle.

3 . Ginger (Adrak)

-Ginger is the most reliable option to ease muscle cramps. The levels of pain causing prostaglandins are reduced by this remedy.

-It also aids in menstrual cycle irregularity or fatigue due to premenstrual syndrome.

Ways To Use

-Grate one small piece of ginger and use it into a cup of hot boiling water.Let the solution boil for around five minutes.Strain it and add honey and lemon juice. Drink this tea three times a day during periods.

-You can also include ginger in your food or chew it directly.

4 . FlaxSeeds (Alasi)

-Alasi, a rich source of omega-3 fatty acid, is amongst the recommended food during periods.

-Omega-3 fatty acids foods have been found to reduce inflammation and period pain.

Ways To Use

-It is recommended, to take 1 teaspoon of flaxseed oil or 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds. However, it is important that you do not take take omega 3 fatty acids in excess as it eases blood flow and may lead to excessive bleeding.

– Flaxseeds powder can be taken with warm water during those tough days or  can be added over salads, cereals and desserts.

5 . Turmeric (Haldi)

-Enriched with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, turmeric helps in reducing pain by inhibiting inflammatory enzymes and prostaglandins (responsible for pain). It also aids the uterine bleeding and therefore reduces pain.

Ways to Use

– It is best to consume turmeric with warm milk during night or during pain hours. Keeping yourself warm may also help.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

–Avoid Coffee. Coffee is known to cause vasoconstriction i.e. constriction of blood vessels. It may even cause the blood vessels in the uterus to tighten up. This in turn can make you suffer a lot of menstrual pain. It is advisable to avoid coffee during those days. Include calcium and magnesium rich foods in your diet.

-Drink a lot of fluids like chaach, nimbu paani, or water as you lose essential fluids from your body during those times.

– Do not starve during these days. Even if you feel full, make sure you take small frequent meals.

– Avoid excess of salt intake. Excessive intake of salt will increase water retention and therefore increase pain.

– Fruits and foods rich in magnesium, such as banana, spinach, celery, avocados and others, should be taken during periods.

-Take proper rest and relax yourself from any stress.

-If the pain is intense and is disrupting your normal activities, consult a doctor.
