So in this section of Know Your Doctor Series, we will be discussing about the hair specialists who can help you diagnose and treat hair problems.
Trichologist: A trichologist is an expert who specialises in hair and scalp related problems. He is also the right person to diagnose alopecia and help treat all forms of alopecia. He might advise various hair and scalp tests to know the exact cause of the hair problem and recommend treatment options for the same. Hence, instead of a general physician it is a good idea to consult a trichologist for all your hair related problems. Some of the common hair problems to consult a trichologist are:
-Baldness (male pattern and female pattern baldness)

-Thinning of hair
-Dry hair-Hair Loss
-Itchy or flaky scalp
Hair transplant surgeon: As the name suggests, a hair transplant surgeon is an expert who specialises in the hair transplant procedure (a technique that involves either seeding of the hair follicles or removing hair follicles from a site and planting it on hairless portions of the scalp). Earlier any licensed physician used to do this procedure, however; nowadays there are hair transplant surgeons who have experience and are dedicated for this treatment. There are different transplant options available, hence it is advised to consult your surgeon about the pros and cons of the procedure before getting it done.
The two common methods for the transplant are:
Follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS)
Follicular unit extraction (FUE)
However, they are not the only experts who can help you treat your hair loss problems. Depending on the cause of hair loss, you might also need to consult few other experts such as –
Dermatologists: They help you to identify any topical skin conditions that might be responsible for hair loss and recommend medicines to promote hair growth.
Endocrinologists: These experts help you to detect and diagnose hormonal imbalances (if any), which could be the cause of severe hair loss and other associated hair problems.
Nutritionists: If the hair problems are caused due to nutritional deficiencies, then consulting a nutritionist is the right approach as they help you with specialised diet plans to improve the condition.
Psychiatrists: They are the right experts to consult for conditions such as trichotillomania or trichophagia, which are rare but serious hair-related psychological problems. Trichotillomania is an impulsive control disorder, where there is a recurrent and irresistible urge to pull out hair from scalp, eyebrows and other areas of the body.
