Sound stimulation found to enhance deep sleep and recalling power among adults, study suggests.
A recent study, conducted at the Northwestern University (US), was focused to study the effect of the “pink noise” in enhancing deep sleep in adults.
-Pink noise is the term used for the sound stimulation caused as in case of a waterfall synchronized with the rhythm of brain waves.
-As per the study, the pink noise has been found to significantly enhance deep sleep in older adults and also improve their ability to recall words.
-In the study, 13 adults received one night of acoustic stimulation and one night of sham stimulation (where the participant did not hear any noise during the sleep). Post this session, the participant also gave memory test in the morning and at night.
-As per the study, the ability to recall improved significantly after the sham stimulation. The average improvement was found to be three times larger after the pink noise stimulation.
-Previous studies suggest that acoustic stimulation significantly improved the memory consolidation amongst the adults, however the same was not evaluated until then.
-Findings were published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience
