Probiotics have been found to improve symptoms of both gastrointestinal problems and depression, recent study suggests
-A recent study conducted by the researchers of the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute studied the effectiveness of probiotics in relieving symptoms of depression and gastrointestinal problems.
-The study included close to 44 adults with IBS and mild to moderate anxiety and depression. Half of the adults consumed a daily dose of probiotic Bifidobacterium longum and were followed for 10 weeks.
-Post 6 weeks, 14 out of 22, showcased decreased depression scores compared to those who did not consume probiotics.
-As per the findings, adults with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and depression taking probiotics showcased significant improvement in their health.
-The study revealed that the microbiota environment in the intestines was found to have a direct communication with the brain and therefore was beneficial for those with depression.
-Probiotics were found to improve both, gut symptoms and psychological symptoms associated with it.
-Findings were published in the Medical Journal of Gastroenterology
