The most common cause of bacterial pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumoniae. Other bacteria, such as Haemophilus influenzae and Staphylococcus aureus, can also lead to pneumonia.

Viral pneumonia is often caused by influenza viruses (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenoviruses, and rhinoviruses. These viruses infect the lungs and cause inflammation.

Fungal pneumonia is less common but can occur in individuals with weakened immune systems. Fungi such as Pneumocystis jirovecii, Cryptococcus, and Histoplasma can lead to pneumonia.

When foreign substances, such as food, drink, or vomit, are inhaled into the lungs, even small foreign objects can cause aspiration pneumonia.

Inhalation of certain chemicals, fumes, or gases can irritate the lungs and lead to chemical pneumonia. This can occur in workplace settings or accidental exposures to toxic substances.
