The HPV vaccine protects against certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a common sexually transmitted infection. These strains can lead to genital warts and various cancers, including cervical, anal, penile, and throat cancers.

The HPV vaccine is recommended for adolescents aged 11 to 12 years old, although it can be given as early as age 9. Vaccination at this age provides the best protection before exposure to the virus through sexual activity.

HPV vaccine is given in 2 or 3 doses, depending on age, spaced several months apart, with the second dose 1-2 months after the first, and the third (if needed) 6 months later.

While the HPV vaccine is recommended for adolescents before sexual activity begins, it can also be given to sexually active individuals to provide protection against HPV strains they may not have been exposed to yet.
