The pain is caused by changes in cabin pressure during takeoff and landing, which can make it hard for your ears to equalize pressure. It’s worse if you have a cold or sinus infection because congestion can block airflow to your ears.

Swallowing helps open the Eustachian tube, balancing ear pressure. Chew gum, suck on candy, or sip water during takeoff and landing. Yawning can also help.

Pinch your nose shut and gently blow air through it. This can help open the Eustachian tube and equalize pressure.

Try pressure-regulating earplugs or cotton balls which can help reduce pressure on your eardrum.

If you have a cold, decongestant sprays or pills can reduce nasal swelling, helping to balance ear pressure. Consult your doctor before using oral decongestants if you have high blood pressure.

For young children, encourage swallowing or yawning with a bottle or pacifier during takeoff and landing to ease ear discomfort. If your baby is breastfeeding, this can also help reduce ear pain during the flight.
