The primary cause of Zika virus infection is the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Other transmission methods include sexual contact, blood transfusions, and from a pregnant woman to her fetus.

Common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. Other symptoms can include muscle pain, headache, and fatigue. Symptoms are usually mild and last for several days to a week.

Zika virus can rarely lead to severe complications like Guillain-Barré syndrome, affecting the nervous system. Pregnant women are particularly at risk of transmitting the virus to their fetus, potentially causing birth defects.

Prevent mosquito bites by using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and using mosquito nets. Remove standing water around your home to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.

There is no specific treatment for Zika virus infection. Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter pain relievers can help alleviate some symptoms.

Do not self-medicate. If you have a fever, consult a doctor promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can manage symptoms and prevent complications from the Zika virus.
