What Are Shingles? Why Should You Know About It?

Shingles, a herpes zoster viral infection, is characterized by a painful rash caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus.

Shingles often begins with a sensitive, tingling, itchy, or painful sensation on your skin.  Soon after, a rash appears that eventually becomes blisters.  Typically, this rash affects just one area on one side of your body or face.

The pain associated with shingles can be severe and is often described as burning, stabbing, or shooting.

The shingles rash generally consists of blisters that scab over in 7 to 10 days and clear up within 2 to 4 weeks.

For some people, the pain can last months or even years after the rash goes away, a condition known as PHN.

– Shingles on the face can affect the eye and cause vision loss. – The rash can become infected. – Rarely, shingles can lead to pneumonia, hearing problems, or brain inflammation (encephalitis).
