A purple or red rash appears mainly on the face, knuckles, elbows, and knees. It may itch and hurt.

Individuals may experience aches and weakness of the muscles of the shoulders, upper arms, hips, thighs, and neck.

The exact cause is unknown, but it may be due to genetics, viruses, sun exposure and certain drugs.

While there's no cure, treatment aims to ease symptoms. It includes medications to reduce inflammation, physical therapy to keep muscles working, and lifestyle changes like healthy diet and sun protection.
