Mpox (Monkeypox) is a viral illness belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus, characterized by symptoms such as rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes.

The term "monkeypox" comes from the virus’s first identification in monkeys for research. However, the virus mainly impacts small mammals and has been increasingly reported in humans in recent years.

Mpox spreads through contact with infected persons, animals, or materials. It can also be transmitted from a pregnant person to their unborn baby.

Common symptoms include blister like rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes. The rash typically lasts 2-4 weeks and can be painful.

Children, pregnant people, and those with weak immune systems are at higher risk of complications from Mpox. People with multiple sexual partners are also at increased risk.
