Q) How to manage joint pains with simple home remedies and maintain joint health?
A) Joint pains can occur because of variety of reasons. They could be triggered by cold weather or a result of old fractures, injuries, bad posture or joint ailments. There are some home remedies and fixes to help ease this pain and stiffness in your joints
Relieve Joint Pains at Home :
1 . Heat and Cold Therapy
Use hot and cold compresses alternatively to help ease joint pain. Heat therapy helps decrease pain, increase blood flow and relax sore muscles and joints. Cold therapy reduces inflammation and numbs the areas around the affected joint. Do not use heat therapy if the affected area is red, hot and irritated.
2 . Oil Massage
Regular massage can improve pain, stiffness and range of motion in the affected joint. Apply a mixture of mustard oil and Camphor to relieve joint pain. Or else you could use warm oil like coconut, olive, sesame or castor oil and apply gentle pressure while massaging.
3 . Epsom Salt Baths (Sendh Namak)
Epsom salt baths help in relieving joint pains. Epsom salt contains magnesium which helps reduce inflammation. Mix two cups of Epsom salt in warm bath water. Soak in it for about 20 minutes. Repeat three times a week until you get relief from your joint pain.
4 . Turmeric Milk
Turmeric is an excellent remedy for joint pain. It contains an active ingredient called curcumin with anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder and a little honey in a glass of warm milk. Drink it daily, at least for a few days.

Maintain Joint Health :
1 . Stand Right
Keep your shoulders back and relaxed, pull in your abdomen, keep your feet about hip distance apart and balance your weight evenly on both feet
2 . Do not Slouch
Do not slouch when watching TV or using a laptop. It can worsen back pain. Keep your spine erect and sit with both your feet planted firmly on the floor.
3 . Bend with Caution
When picking things up, do not bend from the waist, this puts a lot of strain on the back. Instead bend with the knees and hips when lifting things off the floor.
4 . Avoid Sky High Heels
As much as fashion pushes high heels, in the long run high heels are bad for you. They cause a lot of health problems like spider veins around the ankles, wear and tear of knees & a sore lower back. Save the heels for special occasions and never wear them for more than a few hours at a time.
5 . Exercise Regularly
Stay active throughout the day, go for daily walks, do stretching exercises or take up a fitness program.
While I agree with cold therapy to reduce inflammation, I suggest an alternative to just heat. I have recently purchased a wrap that promotes and stimulates to the affected area of my knee pain. Very little warmth but the technology penetrates the dermal layer to get blood flowing deep within. Much more effective and quicker results compared to just heat.
