Autologous stem cell transplant refers to the transplantation of one's preserved stem cells in the same person after high dose chemotherapy damages the stem cells to preserve the function. The stem cells to be stored can be collected directly from the bone marrow, or blood, or both. Autologous transplantation of stem cells is included in the treatment plan for most neoplasms of blood. For example, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, etc. One may receive one or more than one transplants depending on the loss of function and recommendations by the physician.
