Definition
An intestinal obstruction (also called as paralytic ileus) occurs when food or stool cannot move through the intestines. The obstruction can be complete or partial.
Causes and Risk Factors
There are many causes. The most common are:
1. Adhesions
2. Hernias
3. Cancers
4. Certain medicines
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms include:
1. Severe abdominal pain or cramping
2. Vomiting
3. Bloating
4. Loud bowel sounds
5. Swelling of the abdomen
6. Inability to pass gas
7. Constipation
Treatment
A complete intestinal obstruction is a medical emergency. It often requires surgery.
