Prevention of Rabies

Definition

Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus. It can happen in wild animals, including raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes, or in dogs, cats or farm animals. People get it from the bite of an infected animal.

Signs and Symptoms

Common symptoms observed in humans are:
1. Fever
2. Headache
3. Fatigue
4. Confusion
5. Hallucinations
6. Paralysis
Once the symptoms begin, the disease is usually fatal.

Treatment

A series of shots can prevent rabies in people exposed to the virus. The infected person (person bitten by a rabid dog/or any other animal) need to get themselves injected with a series of injections at the earliest.

Prevention

To help prevent rabies:
1. Vaccinate your pet. Rabies vaccines are available for dogs, cats, and farm animals.
2. DO NOT approach stray animals. Animals with rabies might be aggressive and vicious, or tired and weak.
