Atypical antipsychotics are a group of medicines used in the treatment of schizophrenia (a mental disorder with unreal thoughts and behavior). They work by blocking the action of certain chemical messengers in the brain. Some of these medicines may also be prescribed for mood disorders such as mania, bipolar disorder and depression.
