Calcitonin (Salmon) is a hormone that regulates the calcium level in the blood. This hormone helps the body to reverse the bone loss and sometimes also helps in bone formation. Due to this, the number of cells which damages bones becomes comparatively less, hence the bone damage is halted. It has been observed that using Calcitonin (Salmon) can initially increase bone formation by mild activation of the bone forming cells.
Calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D and is produced in the kidneys. Calcitriol is also given as a supplement and helps in calcium metabolism in our body. The prime role of calcitriol is to increase the absorption of calcium from the gut, decrease its excretion from the kidneys, and increased deposition of calcium in bones, thereby helping in maintenance of normal bone health. Whereas, calcitonin is a hormone that regulates blood calcium levels by excreting the extra calcium from the blood through urine. Both the hormone helps in maintaining the calcium balance in our body.
Calcitonin (Salmon) is a naturally occurring thyroid hormone which is used to prevent and to treat thinning and weakening of the bone (osteoporosis) in post-menopausal women.
Osteoclast is a type of bone cell which carry out dissolution and absorption of bone. Calcitonin (Salmon) is a naturally occurring hormone secreted by thyroid gland in the body, which stops the activity of osteoclasts, thereby stops bone removal by the osteoclasts.
Long term treatment with Calcitonin (Salmon) for osteoporosis and osteoarthritis has shown an increase in the risk of cancer in clinical trials.
