Understanding Anti-CCP Antibody

What is Anti-CCP Antibody?

An Anti-CCP Antibody test diagnoses rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and differentiates it from other types of arthritis. It detects the presence of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (Anti-CCP) antibodies in the blood, which are associated with autoimmune diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and are often present in the early stages of the disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis, also known as RA, is an autoimmune (a condition in which the body's natural defense system mistakenly attacks normal/healthy cells) and an inflammatory condition that causes inflammation (painful swelling) of the joints. In addition to the joints, RA sometimes also affects other body parts, including skin, eyes, lungs, or heart.

An Anti-CCP Antibody test helps in the early detection of RA by measuring the presence and levels of antibodies called anti-CCP (anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide) in the blood. The immune system produces these antibodies in response to the citrullinated peptides present in the joints of individuals with RA. Anti-CCP antibodies are particular to RA, and their presence can be detected even before the symptoms manifest.

According to some studies, more than 75% of people with rheumatoid arthritis test positive for CCP antibodies. Hence, this test can distinguish rheumatoid arthritis from other types of arthritis or conditions with similar symptoms, such as psoriatic arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and is more specific than other traditional tests, such as the Rheumatoid Factor-Quantitative test.

Your doctor may recommend an Anti-CCP Antibody test if you show signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, warmth, swelling, morning stiffness in the joints, nodules under the skin, etc. A positive result indicates the presence of anti-CCP antibodies, suggesting a higher likelihood of rheumatoid arthritis. In contrast, a negative result doesn't completely rule out RA; it may indicate a lower probability, especially when combined with clinical and other laboratory findings.

Usually, no special preparation is required for this test; you can eat and drink as per your daily routine. The test results may vary depending on age, gender, health history, and other risk factors. Narrate your complete medical history to help the doctor correlate your clinical and laboratory findings. This will help them determine your medical condition, make recommendations for diet, physical activity, and medication if needed, and manage your condition by formulating your overall treatment plan.

What is Anti-CCP Antibody used for?

An Anti-CCP Antibody test is done:

  • To detect rheumatoid arthritis, evaluate its prognosis, and determine its severity.

  • If you are experiencing signs and symptoms, such as pain, warmth, swelling, morning stiffness in the joints, nodules under the skin, etc, or have other risk factors for arthritis.

  • To differentiate rheumatoid arthritis from other types of arthritis and autoimmune conditions.

  • To monitor disease progression in individuals with RA.

What does Anti-CCP Antibody measure?

An Anti-CCP Antibody test measures the presence of antibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptides (CCP) in the blood. These antibodies are collectively referred to as anti-CCP antibodies. Citrullination is a process where the amino acid arginine is converted to citrulline. In autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the immune system may mistakenly identify citrullinated peptides as foreign invaders and produce antibodies against them.

Anti-CCP antibodies are considered one of the early markers of rheumatoid arthritis. They contribute to the chronic inflammation and joint damage characteristic of RA. Their presence in the blood can aid in the early diagnosis of RA, establish a prognosis for disease progression, and allow timely intervention and management.

Answers to Patient Concerns & Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Anti-CCP Antibody

Frequently Asked Questions about Anti-CCP Antibody

Q. Why is an Anti-CCP Antibody test done?

An Anti-CCP Antibody test is done to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and differentiate RA from other types of arthritis. It also helps check the severity and potential progression of the disease.

Q. Is fasting needed for an Anti-CCP Antibody test?

No, fasting is not required for this test. However, you should inform your doctor about any medications and supplements that you are taking as some of them may interfere with the test results.

Q. What causes high CCP antibodies?

The exact reason for high CCP antibodies is unknown, but several risk factors may cause an increase in their levels. The risk factors may include genetics, smoking, obesity, and old age.

Q. What does a positive anti-CCP test result mean?

A positive anti-CCP test result suggests the presence of specific antibodies associated with rheumatoid arthritis or a severe form of the disease in the blood. However, a positive result does not confirm rheumatoid arthritis. It only indicates the condition, and your doctor may consider additional tests and other factors to confirm the diagnosis accurately.

Q. What other tests can be advised for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis?

Apart from an anti-CCP antibody test, a Rheumatoid Factor-Quantitative test, a Joint X-rays, and a few other blood tests may be advised. If a patient has positive anti-CCP antibody and RF tests, they indicate that the patient has rheumatoid arthritis. If the patient has a positive anti-CCP antibody test but a negative RF test, the patient is likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis in the future. Moreover, if the anti-CCP antibody test is negative, but the RF test is positive, it can indicate that the patient should be analyzed for other inflammatory conditions.

Q. What factors can affect the levels of anti-CCP antibodies?

The primary factor affecting the levels of anti-CCP antibodies is the presence of rheumatoid arthritis. However, other factors, such as certain medications, other inflammatory conditions, and genetics, can also affect these levels.

Q. What is rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints. It causes inflammation, stiffness, and pain in joints. It can occur at any age, but the usual age is after 40 years, and women are more affected than men. It can progress slowly or quickly, but, if untreated, it can cause disability of the joints.

Q. Is rheumatoid arthritis curable?

So far, there is no specific cure for rheumatoid arthritis. However, various treatment approaches are available to manage symptoms, slow the progression of the disease, and improve the quality of life for individuals with rheumatoid arthritis.
