Understanding X - Ray L S (Lumbosacral Spine) LAT View
What is X - Ray L S (Lumbosacral Spine) LAT View?
X-Ray Lumbar-sacral (LS) Spine Lateral View test is a diagnostic medical imaging technique that allows us to view the anatomy of the lower back. It detects abnormalities, injuries, and diseases of the bones related to the lumbar-sacral region. A beam of X-rays forms a 2D image on a special detector. The person stands erect or lies down horizontally in an exam gown without any body movements.
The procedure takes around 10 to 20 minutes, and no side effects are noticed. Body jewellery or piercings are not allowed during the X-ray procedure. For safety, women with possible pregnancies must inform the authorities beforehand. Abnormal results could indicate fractures, slipped discs, osteoporosis, arthritis, tumour, or other birth defects, for which immediate medical treatment is recommended.
What is X - Ray L S (Lumbosacral Spine) LAT View used for?
- To find the cause of the lower back pain that lasts for a long time
- To look for any injury or fracture of the spinal bones (vertebrae)
- To diagnose any suspected tumors (abnormal growth), arthritis, osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) or infections of the spine
- To detect suspected disc problems like spondylolisthesis (dislocation or slipping of one vertebra over the other) or degeneration of the disc
- To look for any abnormalities in the curvature of the spine like lordosis (excessive inward curve of spine), kyphosis (excessive outward curve of spine also known as hunch back), scoliosis (side to side abnormal curvature) or birth defects
