Tosgyl Suspension

Prescription Required

Your child’s medicine at a glance

Tosgyl Suspension is a medicine that has antibiotic and antiparasitic properties. It is given to children for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial and parasitic infections. It may also be given in combination therapy for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease.

Give Tosgyl Suspension to your child orally, with food, preferably at a fixed time. Giving it with food helps prevent the risk of developing a stomach upset. The usually prescribed frequency is three times a day, once each in the morning, afternoon, and at bedtime, keeping a gap of 6 hours between two doses. Always give the dose as prescribed by the doctor since they depend on the severity and type of infection, body weight, and age of your child. If your child vomits within 30 minutes of intake, repeat the same dose but never double up the dose if it is time for the next dose.

Some children may develop minor and temporary side effects after taking this medicine. These include nausea, vomiting, metallic taste, headache, loss of appetite, abdominal cramps, red-brown urine, and mild skin rash. These side effects usually go away once your child’s body adapts to the medicine. However, in case they persist for long or start bothering your child, you must consult your child’s doctor without any delay.

Your child’s doctor must be aware if your child has ever had any previous episode of allergy, heart problem, blood disorder, liver impairment, and kidney malfunction. This will guide the doctor in planning your child’s overall treatment.

Quick tips

  • If your child develops diarrhea as a side effect, encourage them to drink plenty of water.
  • Tosgyl Suspension may cause an altered taste. Eating citrus fruit or sipping plenty of water or fruit juice may help.
  • Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again, become resistant, or cause another infection.
  • Discontinue Tosgyl Suspension and inform the doctor immediately if your child develops a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or has difficulty in breathing.
  • Never save the medicine for future illnesses since its effectiveness in future infections cannot be guaranteed.

FAQs

What if I give excess Tosgyl Suspension by mistake?

An extra dose of Tosgyl Suspension does not usually have any side effects. However, you must always be vigilant because overdose increases the risk of unwanted side effects such as seizures, tremors, severe headache, sudden weakness, blood cell abnormalities, and rapid and irregular heartbeat. In case your child develops any of these symptoms, rush to your child’s doctor immediately. Do speak to the doctor if you think you have given too much Tosgyl Suspension to your child.

What should I do if my child shows no improvement even after taking Tosgyl Suspension for the prescribed duration?

If Tosgyl Suspension fails to provide relief to your child, it could mean that the medicine is not able to act against the infection-causing microorganism. In such a case, visit your child’s doctor who may prescribe some other antibiotic that has a stronger impact on the infection-causing agent.

Can other medicines be given at the same time as Tosgyl Suspension?

Tosgyl Suspension can sometimes interact with other medicines or substances. Tell your doctor about any other medicines your child is taking before starting Tosgyl Suspension. Also, check with your child’s doctor before giving any medicine to your child.

Can I get my child vaccinated while on treatment with Tosgyl Suspension?

Antibiotics usually do not interfere with the ingredients in vaccines or cause a bad reaction in a child who has just been vaccinated. However, children taking antibiotics should not get vaccinated until they recover from the illness. As soon as your child feels better, the vaccine can be given.

What should I tell the doctor before giving Tosgyl Suspension to my child?

Inform the doctor if your child had or has heart disease, genetic disorders involving blood cells, seizures, psychiatric disorders, hypothyroidism, and hypoadrenalism. This is because there is a possibility that Tosgyl Suspension may aggravate these conditions and result in complications.

My child has been passing red-brown urine ever since he started taking Tosgyl Suspension. Is it normal?

Yes, it is normal. Tosgyl Suspension contains metronidazole which can cause red-brown urine. It is a harmless side effect. It will subside once the medicine is stopped after completing the treatment.

My child is suffering from a fever. Can I give Tosgyl Suspension along with fever medicine?

What all lab tests do my child need to undergo while taking Tosgyl Suspension for long-duration therapy?

If your child is taking Tosgyl Suspension for long-term therapy, the doctor may prescribe Complete Blood Count (CBC), Liver Function Test (LFT), and Kidney Function Test (KFT).
