TAKING MEDICINE LIKE VILAMID . HAVING MOOD SWING, ANXIETY . I JUST WANTED TO KNOW, DO I HAVE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE LIFE LONG? PLEASE ALSO GUIDE ME, HOW I CAN RECOVER COMPLETELY?
Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan
Psychiatry
Based on your clinical history, your doctor plans the type of medicine and it's dose and duration. For first episode of anxiety/ depression/ panic, the usual maintenance phase is 6 months of asymptomatic period, after which medicines can be gradually tapered. But treatment may need to continue longer depending on severity and frequency of episodes. To take any decision to change medication or stop them, several factors have to be taken in account for which regular follow up with your psychiatrist is important. For second opinion, seek a proper consultation with another psychiatrist and take along your previous prescriptions.
Hi my name is PATIENT i was always a weak kid in school growing up my parents got seperated, leading my mother basically abandoning me after grade 5.I could never concentrate in school and i always wanted to be outdoors and my marks were terrible ! but anyway in the up-coming years i shifted a lot of shcools had a lot of failures and identety crises could never really calm down and figure what the problem is at the age of 20 i started working at an IT company which was really hard for me to get into but basically a job that i loved ! i was good at it too then i got sacked because i wasn't being able to concentrate again and i started losing interest.Well coming to the point i started seeing my first psycatrist in a year ago and he said i just had genralized anxiety disorder which i was given medication for but didn't solve my depression at all then i went to someone i was diagnosed with add but my main problem as if now is that i was on dazzle 20-30 mg for 15 days and it made me feel too drowzy and slow and blocked my thoughts now my doctor has percribed pregawave-m,S methiwave-400 and vilamid-20 but i haven't had them because I'm scared of the side effects my questions are :- 1. Can i consume alcahol with this drug combination ? 2. is there something more lighter ? 3.is ayurveda better ? 4.and does clinical depression wave off and how long do i take the meds ?
Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan
Psychiatry
1. It is not advisable to take alcohol with medicines. 2. There is no heavy or light medicines. It's individual body's pharmacokinetic response. What suits one may not suit another. If you are having side effects, your psychiatrist can modify regimen accordingly. 3. A qualified Ayurvedacharya will know if he/ she can treat your condition. There are no comparative research studies between Ayurvedic and allopathic regimens to conclude if one is better than the other but as an Allopathy practitioner, I find satisfactory response with psychotropics. 4. Depression and anxiety are neurochemical responses to emetic and environmental factors. Treatment includes both medicines and psychotherapy for developing positive coping skills. Duration and response depend on a number of factors like history, symptom severity, duration and individual personality. Only time will tell if one is completely cured with or without medicines.
