Zifilac Tablet DT

Prescription Required

Your child’s medicine at a glance

Zifilac Tablet DT contains two ingredients, one antibiotic and one probiotic. While the antibiotic helps kill a wide range of bacterial infections, the probiotic prevents the antibiotic from causing digestive problems as a side effect. It does so by restoring the balance of good bacteria in the intestine.

Give Zifilac Tablet DT to your child with or without meals. Though the risk of developing a stomach upset is less with this medicine, giving it with meals will further reduce the risk. The dose and duration depend upon the type and severity of the infection, so stick to the dose, time, and way prescribed by the doctor. If your child vomits within 30 minutes of the intake, give the same dose again but do not double dose if it is time for the next dose.

Zifilac Tablet DT may cause some minor and temporary side effects in your child. These may include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and allergy. Usually, these episodes subside once your child’s body adapts to the medicine. However, if these side effects persist or become bothersome for your child, report to the doctor without any delay.

Narrate your child’s complete medical history to your child’s doctor, including any previous episode of allergy, heart problem, blood disorder, birth defects, airway obstruction, lung anomaly, gastrointestinal problem, skin disorder, liver impairment, and kidney malfunction. This information is critical for dose alterations and for planning your child’s overall treatment.

Uses of Zifilac Tablet DT in children

Benefits of Zifilac Tablet DT for your child

In Treatment of Bacterial infections

Zifilac Tablet DT is an antibiotic medicine. It is commonly given to children to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including infections of the eyes, middle ear, nose, throat, lungs, skin, bone and joints, gastrointestinal tract, and urinary tract. This medicine inhibits the growth of infection-causing bacteria by stopping it from multiplying.

Children usually start showing improvement within 3 to 5 days of the regular dosing. You must continue giving the medicine even after seeing this improvement because stopping the medicine abruptly may worsen your child’s condition or cause infection recurrence.

Side effects of Zifilac Tablet DT in children

Zifilac Tablet DT does not pose serious side effects and is well-tolerated by children. In case the side effects do occur, they’re likely to subside once the body adapts to the medicine. How Zifilac Tablet DT works

Zifilac Tablet DT is a combination of two medicines: Cefixime and Lactobacillus. Cefixime is an antibiotic. It works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering which is essential for the survival of bacteria in the human body. Lactobacillus is a live micro-organism that restores the balance of good bacteria in the intestine that may get upset with antibiotic use or due to intestinal infections.

Quick tips

  • Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again, become resistant, or cause another infection.
  • Zifilac Tablet DT may cause a bitter taste. Eating citrus fruit or sipping plenty of water or fruit juice may help.
  • Encourage your child to drink plenty of water in case diarrhea develops as a side effect.
  • Never give Zifilac Tablet DT until and unless prescribed by the doctor. You must also never share your child’s medicine with anyone else even if they show similar symptoms.

FAQs

My child is suffering from liver failure and his investigations showed high blood ammonia levels. Is it safe to give Zifilac Tablet DT?

No. It is better to avoid giving Zifilac Tablet DT as it contains lactobacillus which can further elevate the levels of blood ammonia and increase the risk of serious complications like coma.

What if I give too much of Zifilac Tablet DT by mistake?

Avoid giving more than the recommended dose because overdose may cause unwanted side effects and may even worsen your child’s condition. Although an extra dose of Zifilac Tablet DT is unlikely to harm, if you think you have given too much of Zifilac Tablet DT to your child, immediately speak to a doctor.

Are there any possible serious side effects of Zifilac Tablet DT?

In rare cases, Zifilac Tablet DT may cause some serious side effects such as persistent vomiting, kidney damage, and allergy. Always consult your child’s doctor for help in such a situation.

Can other medicines be given at the same time as Zifilac Tablet DT?

Zifilac Tablet DT can sometimes interact with other medicines or substances. Tell your doctor about any other medicines your child is taking before starting Zifilac Tablet DT. Also, check with your child’s doctor before giving any medicine to your child.

Can I get my child vaccinated while on treatment with Zifilac Tablet DT?

Antibiotics usually do not interfere with the ingredients in vaccines or cause a bad reaction in a child who has just been vaccinated. However, children taking antibiotics should not get vaccinated until they recover from the illness. As soon as your child feels better, the vaccine can be given.

The mucus coming out of my child’s nose is yellow-green. Is it a sign of a bacterial infection?

No, yellow or green mucus in the nose does not mean that antibiotics are needed. It is normal for mucus to thicken up and change from clear to yellow or green. With symptoms often lasting for 7-10 days, this is exactly how a common cold generally progresses.
