How Hyoscyamine works
Hyoscyamine is an anti-muscarinic. It works by decreasing the stomach secretions such as mucus and acids to relax the gut muscles. By doing this, it relieves abdominal cramps and pain.

- Before taking Hyoscyamine, inform your doctor if you have urination problems, an enlarged prostate, a stomach or bowel obstruction (including paralytic ileus), GERD, or severe ulcerative colitis.
- Avoid taking antacids at the same time you take Hyoscyamine. Antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb Hyoscyamine. If you use an antacid, take it after 2 hours of taking Hyoscyamine.
- Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Hyoscyamine can decrease sweating and you may be more prone to heatstroke.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
- It may not be safe to breastfeed while using this medicine. Ask your doctor about any risk.
