Understanding Barium Meal Upper Git
What is Barium Meal Upper Git?
The Barium Meal Upper Git test focuses on checking the small intestine region, or the duodenum. Doctors read the results of this test to determine issues in the small intestine or stomach, such as polyps, ulcers, or tumours.
Patients drink a little bit of the barium liquid and lay horizontally on the couch. For better visibility, the technician asks patients to swallow citric acid and bicarbonate powder solution beforehand. These react in the stomach and form gas, which helps line the organ better. The procedure lasts for 10-15 minutes. It is recommended to not eat solid foods prior to the test.
What is Barium Meal Upper Git used for?
- • To evaluate the cause of any change in your bowel movements • To diagnose any suspected cancer of the stomach and duodenum • To diagnose suspected diverticular disease or polyps or cysts of the duodenum • To diagnose the cause of any non-specific stomach pain
