BMD Hip And Spine
Understanding BMD Hip And Spine
What is BMD Hip And Spine?
A BMD (bone mineral density) Hip and Spine is a painless X-ray test that examines your hip and spinal area for the presence of calcium and other minerals. It can effectively diagnose osteoporosis (a condition in which bones become fragile due to the formation of pores) and bone loss. Doctors also use this test to evaluate the result of osteoporosis medication and predict your risks of bone fractures.
During the test, you lie on a platform, an X-ray machine sends low-dose X-ray beams and captures images. Reports show T-score (-1 to -2.5 means a risk of osteoporosis, -2.5 and above suggests you may have osteoporosis) and Z-score (examines your bone mass). Precautions include informing your doctor if you are pregnant and removing all metal accessories from your body. Also, avoid taking calcium supplements 24 hours before the test.
