Understanding Cacao
What is Cacao?
Allergen, Individual - Food Cocoa Chocolate (Theobroma Cacao) test measures the total IgE antibodies in the blood and identifies an allergy. Such allergies may occur because certain allergy-causing substances called allergens are identified as invaders by the body. The immune system releases Immunoglobulin-E (IgE) antibodies to protect the body against these allergens. Allergy to cocoa is rare, however, some people show abnormal reactions to ingredients present in chocolate, particularly cocoa. If you have symptoms including trouble swallowing, rashes, sneezing, stomach/abdominal cramps, diarrhea, swelling of lips, nausea, and vomiting, after consuming cocoa, it is recommended that you get tested for a cocoa allergy. The best way to prevent allergy is to avoid the consumption of cocoa directly or indirectly. Read the food ingredient labels carefully before purchasing any products.
What does Cacao measure?
The Cacao test measures the presence and levels of specific IgE antibodies produced by the immune system in response to proteins found in cacao. These proteins can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, especially upon consumption of cacao or products containing cacao like chocolate. It helps doctors distinguish a cacao allergy from other food sensitivities or reactions. Elevated IgE levels suggest an allergy to cacao, helping doctors diagnose and manage allergic reactions more effectively. This test is a highly accurate and reliable method for quantifying IgE antibodies, providing valuable insights into the severity of the allergic response and guiding further diagnostic and treatment decisions.

Interpretations
* If your total IgE level is increased, it usually indicates that you are suffering from allergy to cocoa.
