Csf Flow Study
Understanding Csf Flow Study
What is Csf Flow Study?
The CSF (cerebrospinal) Flow Study is performed to observe fluid flow patterns in the brain and around the spinal cord. It helps identify cystic deformities in the posterior fossa, a small space in the skull. It also helps detect myelomalacia, which is softening of the spinal cord—a serious condition that requires timely diagnosis and treatment. CSF Flow Study also helps detect syringomyelia, a fluid-filled growth in the spinal cord that can cause serious complications.
A variety of MRI techniques are used to study the CSF flow. A local anesthetic injection is used for this procedure to ensure pain relief. Based on the reports of this study, doctors recommend surgery to provide relief to the spinal cord and prevent further damage to the spine.
What is Csf Flow Study used for?
- • To understand and guide the treatment of conditions like aqueduct stenosis and normal pressure hydrocephalus • To understand congenital disorders (birth defects) in the structure of the nervous system • To estimate the efficacy of various treatment procedures
