Understanding FNAC
What is FNAC?
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) test don is to study and examine masses or lumps under the surface of the skin (such as in the head or neck), salivary glands, breasts, prostate, colon, thyroid glands or other organs of the body. It is recommeded in case of a lump or pain felt under the skin.
This test is helpful to detect and diagnose cancer in deep seated organs which cannot be accessed with other invasive surgical procedures. It is also used to detect the recurrence of a cancer and to monitor the efficacy of an ongoing cancer treatment.
This process involves minimum invasion hence preferred over other diagnostic methods.
What is FNAC used for?
- To detect and diagnose cancer in deep seated organs which cannot be accessed with invasive surgical procedures
- To evaluate the recurrence of a cancer following therapy and monitor the efficacy of the treatment (chemotherapy) for tumors already diagnosed
- To differentiate between benign tumor (localized) and malignant tumor (spreading cancer)
- To diagnose breast cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, colon / rectum cancer, lung cancer, blood cancer, lymph node cancer
- To monitor the characterization and progression of the stages of cancer (stage I - stage IV)
