GFR With Cystatin C, Serum -18 Years & Above
Understanding GFR With Cystatin C, Serum -18 Years & Above
What is GFR With Cystatin C, Serum -18 Years & Above?
GFR With Cystatin C, Serum -18 Years & Above is a blood test that measures the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the Cystatin C marker along with serum creatinine levels in individuals above 18 years. Cystatin C is a small protein that is produced by body cells and excreted by the kidneys by glomerular filtration. Serum creatinine values help to determine how well your kidneys are functioning. An eGFR test estimates how well the waste products are filtered out of the kidney. Studies suggest that serum Cystatin C is a good marker of renal function in the early stages of acute kidney injury (AKI) and is less affected by age, gender, muscle mass, and ethnicity as compared to creatinine. This test may be useful for managing chronic kidney disease at an early stage and monitoring kidney function in individuals with diabetes, hypertension, or other conditions that can cause kidney damage.
What does GFR With Cystatin C, Serum -18 Years & Above measure?
Contains 3 testsSerum Creatinine
The Serum Creatinine test measures the level of creatinine in the blood. Creatinine is a byproduct of muscles’ wear and tear during energy production. The kidneys remove it from the body by filtering it from the blood and releasing it into the urine. Therefore, blood creatinine levels indicate how well the kidneys are functioning in filtering and removing waste products from the blood. Generally, higher creatinine levels in the blood may indicate reduced kidney function, while lower levels may suggest decreased muscle mass.
