Glucose Challenge Test 50g (Glucose 1 Hour Obstretical)

The Glucose Challenge Test 50g (Glucose 1 Hour Obstretical) checks for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a condition characterized by impaired glucose tolerance that emerges during pregnancy. This condition can pose significant health risks to both the mother and the developing baby, including complications during labor and long-term metabolic issues.

The Glucose Challenge Test 50g (Glucose 1 Hour Obstretical) is typically recommended during the second trimester of pregnancy. However, it can be done earlier if there are risk factors such as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, a lack of physical activity, a medical condition linked to getting diabetes, such as metabolic syndrome or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), being 35 or older during pregnancy, etc. This one-hour test helps identify any abnormal glucose metabolism early, allowing for timely intervention and management of GDM. Detecting and managing gestational diabetes is important to prevent complications such as high birth weight babies, preterm birth, and the development of type 2 diabetes in the future for both the mother and the child. 

For this test, the patient should drink a solution containing 50g of glucose anhydrous (equivalent to 55g of glucose monohydrate) dissolved in 250-300 mL of cold water and consume it orally over a 5-minute period. The blood sample should then be collected 1 hour after the glucose test load intake. All pregnant women, previously known to have no diabetes should be evaluated for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) at 24 to 28 weeks of gestation. Additionally, the doctor should be informed if vomiting occurs during the 1-hour period after glucose consumption.
