The Glucose Challenge Test, Pregnancy DIPSI, 75g Glucose, 2hrs is a single-step screening blood test done during pregnancy (usually between 24 and 28 weeks) to assess for gestational diabetes. This test involves drinking a 75 g glucose solution and measuring blood sugar levels two hours later to ensure they are within a healthy range. 

The Glucose Challenge Test, Pregnancy DIPSI, 75g Glucose, 2hrs checks for diabetes that develops during pregnancy (gestational diabetes), a condition characterized by glucose intolerance of variable degree with onset or first recognition during pregnancy that can affect both the mother and the baby’s health. 

The Glucose Challenge Test, Pregnancy DIPSI, 75g Glucose, 2hrs, often recommended by the DIPSI (Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group India) involves pregnant women drinking 75 g of oral glucose solution load irrespective of meal timings. Blood sugar levels are then measured two hours after consuming the glucose drink to determine how well the body processes sugar. This two-hour test helps identify any abnormal glucose metabolism early, allowing for timely intervention and management. Detecting and managing gestational diabetes is important to prevent complications such as high birth weight babies, preterm birth, and the development of type 2 diabetes in the future for both the mother and the child. 

The Glucose Challenge Test, Pregnancy DIPSI, 75g Glucose, 2hrs is typically recommended during the second trimester of pregnancy, however, it can be done earlier if there are risk factors such as body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, a lack of physical activity, a medical condition linked to getting diabetes, such as metabolic syndrome or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), being 35 or older during pregnancy, etc are present. 

For this test, overnight fasting is not mandatory. However, on the day of the test, you need to consume a solution containing 75 g of glucose dissolved in 300 ml (about 1.25 glasses) of water. Two hours after oral administration of glucose solution, a blood sample will be collected. Inform your doctor about all the medications or supplements that you are taking, as these may affect the test results and may require adjustments or temporary discontinuation before the test.  Additionally, inform your doctor if you experience vomiting during the 2-hour period after glucose consumption.
