Insulin is a hormone that metabolizes glucose. Lack of insulin or its decreased function increases blood glucose and leads to diabetes. High levels of insulin can cause hypoglycemia (low blood glucose). This test measures the level of insulin in the blood without the need for fasting. The test is used to find out the cause of hypoglycemia, pancreatic tumor, or to monitor the condition of diabetes. You may need this test if you have symptoms of hypoglycemia such as sweating, irregular heartbeat, trembling, confusion, dizziness, and extreme hunger.
