Liver Kidney Microsomal (LKM) Antibody in Dilution by IFA

The Liver Kidney Microsomal (LKM) Antibody in Dilution by IFA test is a blood test used to detect the presence of antibodies directed against liver and kidney microsomal antigens (produced in various liver conditions). These antibodies are commonly associated with autoimmune hepatitis type 2 (AIH-2), a chronic liver disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the liver, causing inflammation and damage. This test may be recommended if symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), unexplained fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine, pale stools, and abnormal liver function tests are noticed. This test also helps distinguish AIH-2 from other liver conditions, such as type 1 autoimmune hepatitis (AIH-1), viral hepatitis, drug-induced liver injury, and other disorders. The test is performed using highly specialised immunofluorescence assay and in dilution to determine the antibody titer, which can provide insights into disease severity and progression.
