What is MR Enteroclysis?
MR enteroclysis/ enterography is a test used for a doctor to see clear and detailed images of your intestine. It will show any inflammation, tumours, bleeding, swelling, and other such problems. This test uses a strong magnetic field to create detailed images of your organs. Before the test starts, intravenous or oral solutions of a contrast substance dye are given to highlight the small intestine. A drug will also be injected, which reduces bowel movements that may interfere with the images.
The intravenous dye may damage kidneys, especially if it does not work at full capacity, and the dye may also cause allergic reactions. Compared to enterography, enteroclysis shows better bowel enlargement. The MRI exam poses no risks when the safety guidelines are followed.
What is MR Enteroclysis used for?
- To assess the anatomical structure and functioning of small intestine
- To detect any suspected inflammations and infections of the small intestine
- To detect any suspected bleeding in the small intestine
- To identify the tumors (abnormal growths) of the small intestine
- To detect any obstructions, fistulas, or abscesses of the small intestine
