Understanding MRCP
What is MRCP?
Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a specialized MRI technique to evaluate the hepatobiliary and pancreatic systems including the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas and pancreatic duct. MRCP scan is used to diagnose blockages caused by gallstones, severe abdominal pain and inflammation or tumor in the bile duct. It also helps in diagnosis of pancreatitis.
It is a non invasive technique hence preferred over other invasive procedures such as ERCP.
What is MRCP used for?
- To diagnose stones presence in the gall bladder, bile duct, pancreas, pancreatic duct, liver
- To detect pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas which causes abdominal pain)
- To find out any obstruction due to presence of the gall stones
- To detect infections of the bile ducts like cholangitis
