MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive diagnostic method to get images of various body parts. Many people suffer pain in their lower back region at the pelvic and hip joint which is called sacroiliac joint (SI joint). The SI joint is very difficult to locate as it is situated deep in the pelvis. Hence, MRIs are used to diagnose SI joint pain as it provides a much clearer image as compared to an X-ray scan.
For the scan, the patient lies on a movable table and is made to wear loose clothes and get rid of all the metallic items. The doctor then makes the table move in the MRI machine and the imaging is done.

Preparations

You might be asked to remove metallic coins, jewelry, metal wristwatches, metallic keys, dentures, or hearing aids, as the MRI uses strong magnetic fields.

Tell your radiologist if you have metallic implants like pacemakers, cochlear implants, aneurysm clips, neuro-stimulators, surgical staples/clips, or drug implants.

Pregnant women should inform their doctor about their pregnancy before going for an MRI.

Informed consent is required.
Why is this test booked?

To diagnose subchondral bone marrow edema (degenerated of the cartilage of the knee joint) and ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis affecting spine and large joints)

To detect erosion of peri-articular erosion which occurs around the joints

To find out subchoondral sclerosis (thickening of the bone in joints) and sacroiliitis (inflammatory condition of the connection point of pelvis and lower spine)
