Radio Iodine Thyroid Scan
Understanding Radio Iodine Thyroid Scan
What is Radio Iodine Thyroid Scan?
Radio Iodine Thyroid scan analyses the structure and function of the thyroid gland, using a radioactive iodine tracer, typically through the radioactive iodine uptake test (RAIU). This test measures radioactive iodine extracted during a specific period by the gland. This test detects goiter, nodules and thyroid hyperactivity. The symptoms include anxiety, sleep issues, weight loss, irregular menstrual periods and goiter.
The results are normal if the image of the thyroid obtained is intact in terms of its size, shape and position, whereas an enlarged thyroid could be of concern. The test is safe as the radioactivity is minimal, however it is suggested that pregnant or breastfeeding women avoid taking the test. The scan takes about 30 minutes to conduct.
