Directions For Use:
- Forceps are applied from below the fetal head while sitting, with traction force coming from the forearms, not the chest. The left blade is usually placed first, and the operator's right hand is fitted between the fetal head and the left vaginal side wall. The left blade is placed by holding the handle at 12 o'clock and rotating counterclockwise as the blade slips between the fetal head and the operator's right hand
- The two blades are then locked, and the baby is delivered with gentle (maximum 30 lbf or 130 Newton) traction in the axis of the pelvis. The baby's head is checked and then rotated to the occiput anterior position if it is not already in that position. An episiotomy may be performed if necessary
- Forceps delivery may be indicated when:
- There is a prolonged second stage
- There is suspicion of immediate or potential fetal compromise in the second stage of labour
- Maternal indications include exhaustion, bleeding, cardiac or pulmonary problems, and a history of spontaneous pneumothorax
- Fetal malpositions, including the after-coming head in breech vaginal delivery

- Vaginal tears: Also called episiotomy, these can be repaired with dissolvable stitches

- The baby may experience:
- Increased risk of facial nerve injury
- Increased risk of clavicle fracture
- Increased risk of intracranial haemorrhage
- Damage to cranial nerve VI, resulting in strabismus
- Forceps should only be applied when the cervix is fully dilated, the fetal vertex is known, and the fetal vertex is engaged
