How Nirmatrelvir + Ritonavir works
Nirmatrelvir + Ritonavir is a combination of two drugs, nirmatrelvir, a SARS-CoV-2-3CL protease inhibitor and ritonavir, the HIV antiretroviral. Nirmatrelvir blocks the action of SARS-CoV-2-3CL protease enzyme, which is essential for replication of the virus. On the other hand, ritonavir prevents the breakdown of nirmatrelvir.

Expert advice for Nirmatrelvir + Ritonavir
- Do not give Nirmatrelvir + Ritonavir to children below 12 years of age or weighing less than 40 kg.
- Seek immediate medical attention if you see signs of allergic reactions like rash, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or swelling of the eyelids, lips, face, throat, or tongue.
- Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease before starting the treatment.
- It is advisable to use non-hormonal contraceptive methods during the 5 days of Nirmatrelvir + Ritonavir treatment and until one menstrual cycle after stopping the drug.
- Do not stop taking Nirmatrelvir + Ritonavir without talking to your doctor first, as it will protect you from becoming severely ill from COVID-19.
