Understanding Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP

What is Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP?

An Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP is a specialized test that evaluates Total IgE (antibodies produced by the immune system in response to allergens) as well as specific IgE against 28 different allergy-causing substances or allergens using the Immunocap technique. These allergens include food, dust, trees, molds, grasses, weeds, pet dander, etc. The test results help determine the cause of the allergy and aid in deciding the course of treatment.

An allergy occurs when the immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless substance (allergens) as harmful and produces an inappropriate response by producing antibodies (specific proteins) called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). An Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP includes the Total IgE test, a blood test used to measure the complete IgE levels in the blood. This test also includes comprehensive screening to detect the presence of specific IgE antibodies to a wide range of allergens, including environmental allergens (e.g., pollen, dust, animal dander, grass, weed), foods (vegetarian and non-vegetarian), and other common allergy triggers.

Your doctor may suggest the Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP if you exhibit symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, skin rashes, hives, etc. Allergens detection through this panel will help your doctor guide appropriate management and treatment decisions and prevent severe complications. This comprehensive panel may also be advised for people with asthma to identify triggers that aggravate asthma symptoms.

Fasting is not required before getting an Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP done. Your doctor may advise you to stop taking antihistamines (medications for treating allergy symptoms) before the test, as these can interfere with the test results.

Reference ranges may vary based on factors such as age, medical history, etc. Narrate your complete medical history to help the doctor correlate your clinical and laboratory findings.

What is Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP used for?

An Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP is done:

  • If you experience allergy symptoms such as itchy or watery eyes, swelling, shortness of breath, skin rash, congestion, hives, diarrhea, eczema, or sneezing.

  • If you have allergic asthma.

  • To track and monitor treatment progress and effectiveness.

  • In individuals with a family history of allergies.

What does Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP measure?

Contains 29 tests

The immune system is your body's most significant defense system against infections. You can have allergic reactions when your immune system overreacts to certain substances, such as food, pollen, medicines, and animal dander. However, these do not cause similar allergic reactions in other people. If not taken seriously, sometimes they can be life-threatening. Therefore, identifying these substances and taking timely precautions and treatment is essential to avoid severe complications.

An Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP offers 29 test parameters that help examine Total IgE and 28 different allergens, such as food, dust, grass, trees, animals, molds, etc, that can cause allergic reactions in the body. These tests help your doctor develop a treatment plan to address serious health challenges your body may face.

Total IgE

Immunoglobulins are antibodies (proteins) produced by plasma cells (specific immune cells) when the body recognizes bacteria, viruses, other microorganisms, or any other unknown substances as harmful foreign antigens (allergy-causing substances or allergens) to the immune system. There are five types of immunoglobulins: IgA, IgG, IgM, IgD, and IgE.

Unlike other antibodies, IgE is primarily associated with immune responses to allergenic substances, such as plant pollen, latex, pet dander, mold, eggs, peanuts, bee venom, and strawberries. Typically, IgE is present in tiny amounts in the blood. When the immune system encounters an allergen, it triggers the production of IgE antibodies. The Total IgE test measures the concentration of these IgE antibodies in the blood, providing insights into the presence and severity of allergies.

Food Panel

The Food Panel measures the body's immune response to specific food allergens, including egg whites, soybean, peanut, wheat, cod fish, shrimp/prawns, blue mussel, and cow milk. By analyzing the immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies, which are produced by the immune system in reaction to these allergens, the test helps identify food sensitivities and allergic reactions. Detecting elevated levels of IgE antibodies to these foods can confirm an allergy, allowing for accurate diagnosis and management of allergic conditions. Getting tested helps guide dietary adjustments and treatment plans to prevent adverse reactions and ensure overall well-being.

Answers to Patient Concerns & Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP

Frequently Asked Questions about Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP

Q. Why is an Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP important?

This test is crucial for identifying potential allergies, which can cause symptoms ranging from mild (like rashes and itching) to severe (like difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness). Identifying the specific allergens that trigger these reactions can help manage symptoms and prevent serious complications.

Q. When should I get tested for an Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP test?

You may need an Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP if you exhibit symptoms such as sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, stuffy and runny nose, hives (rashes with raised red patches), breath shortness, coughing, wheezing, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.

Q. What is the role of IgE in various allergies?

IgE is a type of antibody that the immune system produces in response to allergens. In people with different types of allergies, the immune system mistakenly identifies certain foods as harmful and produces IgE antibodies to fight them. These antibodies can trigger various allergy symptoms.

Q. What do Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP test results mean?

A high Total IgE level indicates an allergy. However, high Total IgE may also be raised in other conditions, such as parasitic infections. A normal or negative result means you do not have an allergy. However, it is possible to have negative results even if you are allergic to a substance. It is, therefore, crucial to consult a doctor or an allergy specialist for result interpretation. Allergen-specific IgE by ImmunoCAP indicates a person’s level of sensitization to a specific allergen and helps detect an allergy in relation to the individual’s history and clinical symptoms.

Q. What is the ImmunoCAP Specific IgE Blood Test?

ImmunoCAP Specific IgE Blood Test is a specialized test that can quantitatively and accurately identify specific allergen sensitivities, i.e., identify an allergy and determine the allergen (allergy-causing substance) in people with a confirmed allergy.

Q. What do ImmunoCAP Specific IgE test results mean?

ImmunoCAP blood test results will indicate whether the patient is sensitized (i.e., has IgE antibodies) to specific allergens. However, sensitization to specific allergens does not always indicate a clinical allergy, as sensitization does not always result in symptoms. Results are reported in the amount of IgE antibodies for a specific allergen in kilounits of allergen per liter of blood. A higher level means more likelihood of involvement of that allergen in causing an allergic reaction. Therefore, each patient’s history must be considered before diagnosing an allergy.

Q. What is an allergy?

Allergy is a common and painful condition that can occur when your body's immune system reacts adversely to certain foreign substances it perceives as a threat. To fight this perceived threat and protect the body, the immune system produces certain chemicals and antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the body, which give rise to the symptoms.

Q. What are allergens?

Allergens are harmful substances that cause an allergic reaction in the body by releasing chemicals and antibodies. These allergies can cause common symptoms ranging from sneezing and blocked nose to a life-threatening complication called anaphylactic shock.

Q. What are the most common types of allergens?

There are three primary types of allergens. These include: 1) Contact Allergens: These allergens usually trigger a reaction after contact with your skin. It often leads to contact dermatitis and involves substances like poison ivy, latex, personal care products like cosmetics, nickel, other metals, certain fabrics, detergents, etc. 2) Inhaled Allergens: These are substances that usually affect the body by being inhaled or coming in contact with the membranes of the nostrils, throat, and lungs. Inhaled allergens can often lead to hay fever, asthma, and conjunctivitis and involve substances like pollen, mold spores, animal proteins, insect parts, or dust mites. 3) Ingested allergens: These are substances that trigger symptoms when swallowed or when they come in contact with the membranes of the food pipe, stomach, intestines, etc. They often cause swelling, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing, including allergens such as peanuts, soy, seafood, and medications like antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents.

Q. What are the common food allergies?

Foods that cause allergies include peanuts, fish, wheat, soy, eggs, milk, nuts, spices like coriander and garlic, meat, and some seeds like sunflower and poppy.
