Cholinesterase OPC Poisoning, Serum

Cholinesterase/pseudocholinesterase, also called serum cholinesterase, is an enzyme that plays a role in breaking down certain neurotransmitters like acetylcholine. Organophosphate compounds (OPCs) are a class of insecticides commonly used in agriculture for pest control and are known to irreversibly inhibit this enzyme. Cholinesterase OPC Poisoning, Serum helps in assessing enzyme levels, identifying exposure to organophosphates, and monitoring treatment effectiveness. Workers in industries with a high risk of exposure to organophosphates are monitored to look for poisoning. Affected people may present with symptoms like excessive sweating, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, muscle weakness, abdominal cramps, blurred vision, etc.  However, abnormal results should be discussed with your doctor, who will consider your symptoms, medical history, and other diagnostic tests to make a definitive diagnosis. The test also helps to assess liver function and to diagnose genetic variants of the enzyme.
