CT Angio- Pulmonary Embolism
Understanding CT Angio- Pulmonary Embolism
What is CT Angio- Pulmonary Embolism?
Doctors find CT (computed tomography) Angio – Pulmonary Embolism an excellent imaging method for the timely detection of a pulmonary embolism. It occurs when a blood clot travels through your bloodstream and lodges in a blood vessel in your lungs. An embolism may cause symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, swelling in your legs. Delay in treatment can be life-threatening. Once detected, doctors initiate treatment to prevent further complications.
During the scan, your doctor injects a special dye through your vein, which provides better images of the blood vessels in your chest and lungs. Rotating x-ray beams take images that confirm the presence of a clot. Let your doctor know if you have had any recent surgery, are allergic to contrast material, or are pregnant.
What is CT Angio- Pulmonary Embolism used for?
- • To evaluate the pulmonary blood vessels for embolism or blockage which may be caused by a number of factors like air, blood clot, fat deposits, tumor, etc. • To check for abnormalities of blood clotting factors causing increased blood coagulation • To evaluate the pulmonary blood vessels for embolism or blockage in case of recent surgery or prolonged period of immobility like bed rest • To detect the presence of any malignant tumors (abnormal growth)
