HSV 2, IgG & IgM
Understanding HSV 2, IgG & IgM
What is HSV 2, IgG & IgM?
The HSV 2, IgG & IgM test is a blood test done to detect the presence of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2, known to cause primarily genital herpes. This test helps determine the stage of the infection, differentiate between recent (acute) and past (chronic) infections, and aid in the timely management of the infection.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection (herpes) is a skin infection that may spread through sexual contact or skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. HSV-2 primarily causes genital herpes, which is characterized by painful sores and blisters in the genital and anal area.
The HSV 2, IgG & IgM test measures two types of antibodies: Immunoglobulin G (IgG) and Immunoglobulin M (IgM) produced as an immune response against HSV-2. IgM antibodies suggest a recent or acute infection, as they are produced early in the immune response and usually decline after a few months. IgG antibodies indicate past or chronic infection with the virus, as they typically develop after the initial infection and persist for life.
This test is often recommended when an individual exhibits symptoms suggestive of genital herpes, such as sores or blisters around genital and anal area, recurring blisters or ulcers, pain during urination, unusual discharge from the urethra and vagina, fever, body aches, etc. This test can also be done as part of routine screenings for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or pre-pregnancy check-ups, as HSV-2 can be transmitted to the baby during childbirth.
No specific preparation is needed to get the HSV 2, IgG & IgM test done. You can eat and drink normally before the test. Talk to your doctor about your specific test results. Narrate your complete medical history and symptoms to help them correlate your clinical and laboratory findings and formulate your treatment plan.
What is HSV 2, IgG & IgM used for?
The HSV 2, IgG & IgM test is done:
- To confirm the diagnosis of herpes simplex virus (HSV) 2 infection in individuals with suggestive symptoms.
- To find out if an individual has recently or previously (in the past) been exposed to herpes infection.
- For individuals experiencing symptoms of herpes, such as cold or genital sores, or those who have been exposed to the virus and wish to know their infection status.
- As a screening test during pregnancy to prevent neonatal herpes.
What does HSV 2, IgG & IgM measure?
Contains 2 testsThe HSV 2, IgG & IgM test is a blood test used to measure two types of antibodies: Immunoglobulin G (IgG) and Immunoglobulin M (IgM) against herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2. IgG antibodies indicate a past infection or long-term presence of the virus, while IgM antibodies suggest a recent or acute infection. By identifying these antibodies, this test helps determine if an individual has been exposed to the virus and distinguishes between new and existing infections.
Early and precise identification of HSV infections allows timely medical intervention, reducing symptoms and preventing complications. For pregnant women, detecting an HSV infection is crucial to prevent neonatal herpes, which can be severe for newborns. Additionally, knowing one's HSV status helps in taking preventive measures to avoid transmission to sexual partners and others, thus playing a significant role in public health and personal well-being.
Herpes Simplex Virus 2, IgG
The Herpes Simplex Virus 2, IgG test looks for the presence of IgG antibodies against HSV-2 in response to the Herpes infection. IgG antibodies are the most frequent type of antibody, which are developed around 18 to 21 days after the virus invades the body and remains in the body for life. Thus, the presence of IgG antibodies typically means an individual has been infected with the HSV-2 at some point. Detection of HSV-2 infection allows doctors to provide necessary support and guidance to individuals suffering from genital herpes, leading to better treatment outcomes and improved quality of life.

Herpes Simplex Virus 2, IgM
The Herpes Simplex Virus 2, IgM test detects the presence of IgM antibodies that are produced against an infection caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2). IgM antibodies specific for HSV-2 are present only for a relatively short period of time. They are the first antibodies to form after the infection and are excellent markers for the presence of a recently acquired or active disease. Also, these antibodies are usually present in higher concentrations shortly after infection and eventually decrease after some time (7-10 days).

Interpreting HSV 2, IgG & IgM results
Interpretations
- A positive HSV-2 IgM test indicates recent or active infection.
• A positive HSV-2 IgG test indicates previous infection.
• A significant increase in HSV 2 IgG antibodies also indicates an active or recent infection.
• Negative results indicate that no exposure to HSV occurred, or that antibodies were not yet produced.
