Understanding Hysterosalpingiography
What is Hysterosalpingiography?
A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a fluoroscopic procedure that uses an X-ray to get an image of fallopian tubes and uterus. In this, a dye is injected into the body which helps in getting much clear picture. This procedure is most commonly used in the investigation of infertility or recurrent spontaneous abortions.
The dye used in the test spreads through the reproductive tract which helps the doctor to detect blockages or abnormalities which may be preventing an egg from moving through a fallopian tube to the uterus. It can also find an injury in the uterus or fallopian tubes.
HSG is relatively safe and in some cases can be considered as a treatment. The dye used in the test can sometimes open up small blockages in the fallopian tubes.
