Understanding Ultrasound TVS
What is Ultrasound TVS?
The Transvaginal (TVS) ultrasound is a safe, painless, non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed real-time images of the reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, vagina) in women. This imaging test helps diagnose and monitor conditions such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, and pregnancy complications.
TVS Ultrasound is a radiation-free procedure, making it a safe and preferred choice for gynecological assessments in women. Unlike traditional ultrasound, which uses a device on the surface of the abdomen, TVS involves a specialized probe that is inserted into the vagina, and sound waves create a much clearer and more detailed view of the pelvic area. This helps in the diagnosis and monitoring of various conditions affecting the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and cervix.
It is commonly recommended for women experiencing symptoms such as irregular periods, pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, or those undergoing fertility treatments. Additionally, it plays an important role in early pregnancy scans, helping doctors assess fetal development, confirm the location of the pregnancy, and detect any abnormalities.
For this test, you will be asked to undress, usually from the waist down and cover yourself with a gown. A full bladder is recommended as it gently pushes nearby intestines aside which creates a clear path for the ultrasound waves to reach the reproductive organs, resulting in clearer images of the intended areas. After the test, you will be asked to empty your bladder for comfort. Inform your doctor/ technician if you are pregnant. While the USG is safe, certain adjustments may be needed to ensure the best care during pregnancy.
Interpretation of test results requires expert guidance, therefore do not self-medicate solely based on these test results and always consult the doctor for proper understanding of your test results. The Ultrasound TVS helps doctors make targeted treatment plans for reproductive disorders in women.

What is Ultrasound TVS used for?
The Ultrasound TVS test is done:
- To evaluate the female reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries, cervix, and vagina).
- To diagnose and monitor conditions such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, etc.
- To investigate the cause of symptoms like pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, menstrual problems, recurrent miscarriages, infertility etc.
- To monitor fetal development during pregnancy.
What does Ultrasound TVS measure?
The TVS Ultrasound test measures various aspects of the female reproductive organs, providing valuable insights into your health. During the test, the ultrasound probe emits high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of uterus size, shape and position, ovary size, shape and function, cervix and vaginal canal, fetal development (during pregnancy), thickness of the uterine lining (endometrium), presence of fibroids, cysts or tumors, blood flow to the reproductive organs. These measurements will help your doctor to diagnose conditions like endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or ovarian cysts, monitor fetal growth and development during pregnancy, evaluate pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding, guide treatment decisions and monitor the effectiveness of treatments.
